7th Annual Kentucky Art Car Weekend August 1 & 2

Next weekend August 1 & 2, 2008 the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft will be hosting the 7th Annual Kentucky Art Car Weekend. I've never made it to an Art Car Weekend event but I'm feeling like this is the year I finally do.

The weekend will kick off with a drive-in movie hosted by the Mellwood Arts Center on Thursday, July 31st at 9pm. Several cars will be on display, while the Mellwood parking lot will become a full fledged drive-in movie theatre, complete with a concession stand and a radio transmitted sound.

Beginning at 9am on Friday, August 1st, International art cars will arrive and park along the 700 block of West Main Street. The cars will remain on display through the First Friday Trolley Hop for a block party that consists of artist demonstrations, artists selling their artwork and live music. At 8:30pm the cars will go on an illuminated cruise to Lynn's Paradise Café.

At 9am on Saturday morning, the cars will return to the 700 block of Main Street where the block party continues. From 10am-12pm the Museum will host a hands-on workshop where children can build their own mini art car. At 12pm an Art Car lecture will be given in the Street Gallery at the Museum. Beginning at 1pm, the cars will embark on the art car parade, traveling from Mid-City Mall down historic Bardstown Road, circling the Douglass Loop and culminating in the parking lot of the Bardstown Road Presbyterian Church. They will remain there on display until 5pm.

On Saturday evening beginning at 6pm, the Mellwood Arts Center will host the Kentucky Art Car Weekend Hoedown. The party is open to the public, and will feature live music, refreshments, and the art cars on display for the last time.

In total, there will be over 30 cars from across the United States and Canada participating, including cars from Arkansas, Florida, Texas, North Carolina, Illinois, Maryland, Georgia, New Jersey, Indiana and Missouri. Louisville's own Monica Mahoney, creator of the "Arillated" 21c Pip-Mobile Limousine and commissioned by 21c Museum Hotel has created another Art Car! "Blind Spot" will be featured this year among "Sashimi Tabernacle Choir" by artist Richard Carter of Texas and "The Phone Car" by Howard Davis of Massachusetts.

The event is FREE to the public on Friday evening, August 1st during Trolley Hop hours and Saturday August 2nd until 1pm.
