Opposites Attract at Flame Run

| | Comments (0) | Art , Downtown
You know how cool I think Flame Run is. You should think it's cool too after all those photos I showed you. There's a new show opening at Flame Run next weekend that is a collaboration between Flame Run owners Brook and Susie White that sounds very cool indeed. I suggest you head downtown for First Friday and see it. As an aside the August First Friday event is sounding pretty kick ass with this and the Ashely Cecil exhibit. I'm excited about it.

Here's the press release info on the show and an image they provided.

Brook and Susie vessels - small file.jpg"Opposites Attract: Collaborative works by Susie Slabaugh White and Brook Forest White Jr." celebrates the couple's artistic partnership. The exhibit opens Aug. 1 and runs through Sept. 20. An opening reception will be Aug. 2.

The show's title reflects the very different ways the artists conceptualize their work.

"I am a free spirit in every sense of my life and especially my art," Susie said. "My mother remembers me seeing the world as a painting. She knew then as I do now that I see the world differently: millions and millions of images and inspiration everywhere I am. My work captures glimpses from my world."

Brook found art through glass blowing. "The glass-blowing process captured my attention from the very beginning, and it is still that process that drives me."

An example of how a typical collaboration comes to fruition begins with Brook making a big glass vessel that serves as Susie's canvas. Then Susie, whose background is in painting and drawing, etches, sandblasts or implements other "cold work" to the surface of the glass.

"Susie and I work very differently, but somehow the fire brings us together in the creative process, and we usually find common ground," Brook said.

The glass art exhibition is the first time since they opened the hot shop and gallery in 2004 that the couple has shown solely their own work.
Update: The opening for this show is now going to be Friday August 1 and not Saturday August 2.
