It's time for another Sarabande poetry night at The Pink Door.

The scoop:

Michael Dumanis was born in the Soviet Union and lived there until his parents were granted political asylum in the United States.  He first came to Sarabande when he co-edited the controversial anthology Legitimate Dangers that we published in 2006.  From there, he went on to win the 2006 Juniper Prize for Poetry for his debut collection of poetry, My Soviet Union.   Currently, he teaches at Cleveland State University and is the Director of the Poetry Center there.  One of my favorite poets, Mark Doty, commented about his book, saying "My Soviet Union is a remarkable album of dark vaudeville and assured verbal performances. Its speakers are a host of desperate comedians at the edge of history, making do and making jokes in the ruins of empire. The spirits of Joseph Cornell, Mayakovsky, and Buster Keaton seem to ventriloquize the earthly, troublesome body of one Michael Dumanis, a haunted citizen born in a country that no longer exists, standing before us in a confluence of phrases that are themselves a sort of nation: crazed, American, beautiful, a giddy torrent of comedy and sorrow."

Sean Singer's first book, Discography, won the 2001 Yale Series of Younger Poets Prize, selected by W.S. Merwin, and the Norma Farber First Book Award from the Poetry Society of America. He also won a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, and a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. He lives in New York City.  You can catch a snippet of him reading on the amazing From the Fishouse website at: http://www.fishousepoems.org/archives/sean_singer/index.shtml.
Teneia Sanders has played on WFPK's Live Lunch, collaborated with Louisville hip-hop bands Nappy Roots and Code Red, and opened for Canadian musician Luke Doucet. Her first full album, Soul Catcher, produced by William Bartley of Slackshop, was featured by CDBaby.com as one of their albums of the week in April of 2007. Currently living and performing in Louisville, KY, Teneia is quickly making a name for herself as an up-and-coming artist to keep an eye and ear on. Her angelic voice, unique guitar rhythms, and moving lyrics have helped to solidify her growing reputation as a truly gifted artist, one whose dedication is as strong as her music.  You can listen to her online at http://www.myspace.com/teneiasanders.

Just read that headline over and over again and smile. That's right kids, Cafe Lou Lou is opening a second location and it's going to be in walking distance from my house. Isn't this a lovely, lovely day?

Dear Lou Lou-ers,

We are excited and pleased to announce the opening of an additional Cafe Lou Lou, located in the Douglass Loop, in the Highlands-Bardstown Road area, near the Heine Bros. We are hoping to open mid-August, if all the work crews show up on time, etc. We will have the same menu and here's the bonus, drum roll please, DELIVERY in a limited area. The new place has parking behind and across the street. There are metered parking spots in front of the store too.
In the meantime, come see us in St. Matthews...July 9 is our first birthday in this location. Can you believe how fast time flies???

Looking forward to seeing you soon,
Helen and Clay
I can see already that this is going to be a Sitar type situation. Meaning I'm going to want to eat there so much I have to walk there to at least partially negate such frequent eating out. No driving to Cafe Lou Lou in the Highlands for me and that's totally ok. This also means that I now know where nearly all my business lunches are going to be. Let me point out though that I'm always happy to have free meals and will even drive for them. So if it'd like to have a meeting with me at say, Proof, and you're buying I'll totally get in the car for that.
Next Monday March 31, 2008 it will be time for another poetry reading at The Pink Door brought to you by Sarabande Books. This month's reading features Louisville poet Lynnell Edwards and Louisville singer-songwriter Brigid Kaelin. It's an all "Louisville produces kick-ass artists" show.

From the press release:
If you don't yet know about Lynnell Edwards, you definitely should.  She is the author of two books of poetry, both published by Red Hen Press, The Farmer's Daughter and The Highwayman's Wife.  Lynnell's poems are by turns graceful, tough, and downright funny. . . . to give you a taste of her work, I've pasted one of my favorite poems by her below.  (She wrote it to her son after seeing him watch an all-female version of Fear Factor in which the women were coaxed into walking through a box of reptiles to hunt out gold coins.)

Brigid Kaelin will follow. Known for her clever songwriting and energetic live show, Brigid is also a seriously trained musician. You may come to the show for her red hair, and you may laugh at the yodeling. But then you'll be completely amazed by her virtuosic chops on the accordion, piano, guitar, and musical saw, and suddenly you'll realize that you love her songs too. Part vaudeville, part rock, Kaelin writes killer songs and knows how to entertain.

heinedrivethru.jpgKnow how I know? Because the Douglass Loop store is going to be open on Christmas day from 7-30AM-3:30PM. The Chenoweth Lane store is going to be open as well but only until 12:30PM, I believe.

Know how else I know? Because the new Heine Brothers at Gardiner Lane is going to have a drive thru. Yep, an easily accessible drive thru right beside the Watterson for an easy cappuccino fillup on my way out of town. Coffee is love.
pinkdoorxmas.jpgAny party that allows free entry before midnight but charges if you come after midnight is a party that's too young and hip for me. However I freaking love the flyer for this event and I know there are plenty of you kids out there that are young and hip enough for this event. Have enough fun and drinks for the both of us.

Sarabande Books last Pink Door reading of the year is tonight Monday, November 26th.

Poet Angela Estes (winner of the 2001 Field Poetry Prize, the 2001 Alice Fay di Castagnola Prize from the Poetry Society of America, and the 1995 Peregrine Smith Poetry Prize) will visit us from Ohio State University.

Poet Angela Estes won't be there, but in her stead will be the fabulous Erin Keane, whose book, The Gravity Soundtrack, just came out with WordFarm Press. She also has a chapbook, The One-Hit Wonders (Snark Publishing), and many of you may know her from her work with the InKY Reading Series here in Louisville. Keane also writes a blog for Velocity and teaches at Bellarmine and the Kentucky Governor's School for the Arts. (You can read more about her and her work at http://www.sensilla.com)

Afterward, Joey Mudd will be playing.

As always, this event is free and open to the public, and will start at 7:30PM
